Three-dozen WI cities to vote on immediate Iraq withdrawal
March 25, 2006
On April 4th, the citizens of nearly three-dozen Wisconsin cities and villages will vote on the war in Iraq. The resolution before them in each city will be some variation of, "Resolved: The United States should bring all military personnel home from Iraq now." As Watertown resident Bill Reichertz told the Chicago Tribune:
"People always have to lead politicians. Politicians are waiting to see which way the wind is blowing. The fight is worth it no matter whether we win or lose, because democracy lets people have a vote."
The upcoming statewide vote on the war has already attracted international attention, from the Washington Post and the Toronto Globe & Mail, to German and British broadcasting. The troop withdrawal campaign is a grassroots effort involving the use of Wisconsin's direct legislation statutes (otherwise known as citizen initiative), which allow citizens to assume the place of their municipal representatives and to vote on legislation themselves. Similar troop withdrawal initiative campaigns are now in the works in other states.
Liberty Tree is proud to have provided effective, and ongoing, legal counsel to the troop withdrawal efforts.
