Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.
~ Frederick Douglass

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS: Deepening democracy as a way of life

Date:

May 13, 2010 -May 19, 2010

Location:

Rosario, Argentina

Full Description:

Challenges for participatory democracy and citizenship learning in the 21st Century
Organized by Facultad de Ciencia Política y Relaciones Internacionales, Universidad Nacional de Rosario.

Call for Proposals: November 30, 2009

In a time of great global transformations, we invite you to share experiences and critical reflections about the follow questions: If in the last two centuries we fought to institutionalize civil, political, and social rights, in the 21st century can we spread and deepen democracy as a way of life? If so, how?

The conference, which follows on two previous conferences held at the University of Toronto, will have two unique characteristics, which we hope will make it lively and stimulating:

  •  First, along with academic papers, it will include organizations and programs presenting their own political and artistic practices of participatory democracy, to the extent possible at the same sites where these practices are implemented.
  •  Second, it will be held not only in a central location - the Cultural Center Bernardino Rivadavia - but also at various sites throughout the city, promoting dialogue between local actors and national and international visitors.

The spirit of democracy appears now and then in history, at those moments when people fight for it. If you try to achieve democracy by waiting for it, you will wait forever.
